BIG BROTHER/SISTER IS WATCHING YOU!

Like Orwell's novel 1984, the opera 1984 describes a not too distant future. Building on Orwell's characters and based on the structure of the novel, the piece tells a dystopian vision of a totalitarian surveillance state.

An artificial intelligence (AI) is used to monitor humanity, which has almost completely destroyed planet Earth. With the help of AI, it is hoped that humans and nature can finally live in harmony, mentally and physically healthy.

Building on Orwell's characters and based on the structure of the novel, the piece tells a dystopian vision of a totalitarian surveillance state. In his composition, Christian Klinkenberg combines elements of rock and jazz music with those of contemporary music.

"For his third opera, Christian Klinkenberg adapts Orwell's classic "1984", which author and director Ela Baumann transports to a near future controlled by an AI. Klinkenberg's play with microtonality and a score streamed graphically on laptops is sophisticated, cerebral and fun at the same time - and is skilfully embedded in the esprit of Orwell's dystopia thanks to Baumann's ability to oscillate almost effortlessly between humour and horror."
